The boat captain jumped into the water and climbed onto the rocks, after being jolted awake when his 16-foot vessel slammed onto the jetty at the Dana Point Harbor.

He suffered several broken bones and a severe head injury, and he was trapped. Rescuers had to figure out how to navigate the 3- to 5-foot swell slamming the precarious location to save the man.

Four months later and further north, at Huntington State Beach, in the darkness of night, lifeguards searched for two victims caught in a rip current, using only the sound of their voices to find them.
